less vulnerable. sandy was a devastating storm. many lives were lost as a result of the storm bond seven in my state of maryland. eight billion people on the east coast of the united states at some time were without power at the results of sandy. maryland fare much better than our surrounding states. we sent a lot of our resources to help our friends in new york and new jersey and other states that were impacted, but it was the severe storm for the people in maryland. the high sustained winds were unprecedented in our state. 70 mile an hour winds, hour upon hour upon hour, doing incredible damage to our state. heavy rains. we had record number amount of rains, nine inches in the coastal area. that caused extreme coastal flooding, storm surges worked severe, waves were as high as seven feet. i want to talk specifically about the 2 regions of our state in which people are still trying to recover from the severity of the storm. one is western maryland. we were experiencing nine inches of rain on the east coast of maryland, western part of our state had this blizzard that occurred that

sandy has affected us in delaware compared to our neighbors to the north. we are doing okay. this sandy didn't spare delaware and we have produced beyond our state's ability to provide. from the moment it is clear we are in the storm's path, i've been grateful for the work of governor jack martel and his entire team. state, county, local officials, first responders, american red cross, national guard, many volunteers are hoped to protect the residents as it approached and well after it passed. president obama, fema, the rest of the administration's team working hand in glove with their state team. in this case there was really a team. as i like to say there is no i in the word team. i should have the army corps of engineers has been particular in responding to hurricane sandy. over the years, funded by a series of storm protection projects in maryland are polite, robust and strong, healthy systems. these types of projects criticized at the time by some on my opinion because they performed exceptionally well during sandy black hundreds of millions, maybe billions of dollars in damage. as

to, believe it or not, hurricane sandy. >> jeff flock has the story at the bureau in chicago. hi, jeff. >> indeed. two headlines. sandy one, and the other is fiscal cliff. starting to see the first impacts now in terms of considerations about fiscal cliff on the sales call today with ford keeping production up in the first quarter. they are bullish, increasing production by 11%, and gm holding off on sales forecasts because they are worried about the cliff. look at the numbers. as lori said, gm up 3%, ford up 6%, chrysler up, 30th consecutive month of increases for chrysler, toyota up 17%. gm did well with small cars, we're getting to the point in the country where cars are # getting so old, 11 years is the average age of a vehicle right now, and that is driving it as well. on the sandy front, as we look at the stock numbers, the folks at ford say we are 30,000 additional sales industry-wide because of sandy. toyota said they they 400,000 cars were damaged in sandy, a boost to gm and ford. look at the stock there. ford stock not harmed by news of another recall for them. that rec

are back on track after hurricane sandy disrupted the pace. dealership showrooms are busy again with people forced to buy cars demolished by the storm, and consumers are feeling more confident about the economy. at ford, sales were up 6.5%. gm reported a 3.4% hike in sales, while at chrysler, a 14% boost was reported. joe wiesenfelder of cars.com says due to superstorm sandy, the numbers may continue to roll in positive for months to come. spiking because of hurricane sandy. that's welcome relief to many drivers, but it still costs more to fill up your tank now compared to a year ago. erika miller reports from one of the most expensive cities to fill 'er up. >> reporter: here in new york city, the long lines and gas rationing are finally gone, but there's more good news. like the rest of the nation, gas is actually cheaper now than before superstorm sandy. a month ago, superstorm sandy shut down refineries in the northeast, delayed oil shipments and left many gasoline stations without power. in some hard hit areas, prices spiked more than ten cents a gallon. but now, the situation has drastically improved here and around the country. regular unleaded costs an average of $3.42 nationwide. that's 12 cents below where it was a month ago. but drivers are still paying about 12 cents more for gas today than a year ago. a big reason is escalating middle east tensions. >> anytime you have that kind of conflict in the middle east, whether it's the israelis or the egyptians, the syrians, it really the disruption of flow, you know. any
